Interview on WROTE Podcast (YouTube Channel)

Happy Wednesday everyone! This week I’m excited to share the interview I did on WROTE Podcast (learn more here), we talked about my newest novel Mu; Legend of a Lost City (get your copy here), how I came up with the idea, the legends that support the story, and the characters that inhabit this world.

We have a great conversation and a lot of fun talking about what I read as a kid, who inspires my writing and what are some of my favorite things. I hope you’ll give the 30 minute interview a watch and show some love to WROTE Podcast, because they are amazing.

Check out the interview here:

I hope you enjoy the interview. Until next time have a great week.

2023 Year in Review!

Happy 2024 everyone. I hope that you are all having a great start to the new year. I want to share with you my year in review. See where we’ve been and where we are going.

I launched Mu; Legend of a Lost City with my new publisher; Spectrum Books.

For the third year in a row, I had one of my short stories; Thanksgiving Pie shared in the BAQWA Presents anthology.

I released Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3) on audiobook thanks to the talented Steve Connor.

I finished my next novel, a haunting story about a neighborhood tormented by angry spirits.

I began work on my newest story, set in an alternate reality where airships sail the skies.

I continued work on the fourth novel in my Sci-Fi series A New World.

I was a guest at the Rainbow Chamber of Commerce (March 2023) and the Milpitas Chamber of Commerce (Dec 2023).

I participated in the Hayward Lit Hop with the Bay Area Queer Writers Association.

I attended several Pride Events this year: Placer Pride, Davis Pride, Sacramento Pride, and Modesto Pride.

I was a speaker at BayCon 2023.

I continued to meet and interact with several authors, who remind me of why I write.

With respect to my book sales, 2023 was my best year! Thank you to everyone who has continued to buy and support my work.

2023 wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. This year I also lost an aunt, several co-workers and a dear friend from high school.

As to not end this year in review on a low note, my husband and I celebrated 25 years together, and we marked this milestone with a cruise. We experienced the first ever Pride Night at Disneyland and we also enjoyed several other visits to the Happiest Place on Earth.

As with years past, we got together with several wonderful friends and family who we don’t get to see near enough, but we enjoy the time with them when we do get together.

For 2024 I’m planning on more in person and virtual events and I’m hoping to release at least one new work this year.

I’m sure there are several events that I’ve missed, however 2023 was a good year and here’s to 2024 being even better.

Happy New Year!

Mu; Legend of a Lost City – Coming November 2023

Happy Wednesday Scribblers, today is the last day of August and again I’m asking myself where did the month go? I hope you all had a wonderful August. I know there’s a lot happening, but I still hope you managed to enjoy yourselves. Today I’m excited to share with you all the current details I have about Mu; Legend of a Lost City. This new novel is the eighth full-length book I’ve written and I’m proud of not only how much my writing has improved, but how Mu; Legend of a Lost City turned out. This was a fun story to craft and holds a special place in my heart, as one of the characters is named after a dear friend of mine who passed away this last year. I hope I do the character justice and folks resonate with the story and the characters.

Mu; Legend of a Lost City is being published by Spectrum Books (find them here) and will launch on November 11th assuming there are no delays, which hopefully there won’t be.

Here is the blurb all about Mu; Legend of a Lost City:

For years, the whispers and legends of a lost city hiding in the Pacific Ocean were just that; legend. On the day Kaimi discovers his parents, the Queen and King of Mu, murdered, Mu’s most powerful weapon fired, sending a pulse rushing towards the North American west coast.

After the 2025 Great Pacific Pulse Event, or Pulse, vomited up much of humankind’s trash in the Pacific Ocean along the North American west coast. The mysterious occurrence causing the largest environmental disaster in human history, people are no longer certain there is nothing concealed in the depths of the ocean. Scientist Karen Linn and billionaire investor Michael Donovan want to find out what actually happened that day five years ago. Will Michael’s life in the adult entertainment industry and Karen’s moniker in pseudoscience keep them as social pariahs, or are they on the cusp of finding a civilization that has been kept out of our grasp, deep in the world’s largest ocean? How does the event from five years ago tie into the murder of the Queen and King of Mu? What lies under the sea may be bigger than anyone can imagine, and neither civilization may be ready for the truth.

And most importantly, here is the amazing cover for the book:

A little more about the story. With Mu; Legend of a Lost City, I wanted to write an adventure story about finding a long-lost world, but Atlantis has been done by so many authors and writers that I wanted to find a new location, one hopefully on the West Coast of North America, since I love to place all my novels in the San Francisco Bay Area (more specifically San Jose). I did quite a bit of research and learned about the legend of Mu (you can learn more here). From finding out about this lost place, I dug into the stories and tried to piece together what would work for my novel and what would make for an enjoyable read.

When it came to the main characters, I wanted to tell the story from three points of view, the first being a character from Mu itself, so that is where Kaimi Tupu came from. He is a Prince and finds his parents murdered, leaving him to become King, but all is not well in the kingdom. I wanted to respect the area of the world this city was located in so I drew from the Polynesian culture. This was a lot of fun to write about and since these people were not from any single civilization, I enjoyed making up my own society for them. I pulled bits and pieces from all over the Pacific Rim. As for Kaimi himself he wants to see the world and doesn’t understand why Mu has been hiding from the rest of the world, he loves his family and understands his duty, but has no interest in being the ruler of Mu. He’s a wonderful character and I hope people will enjoy learning more about him.

For the scientist I wanted to bring forward a person who didn’t care what people thought about her and who held true to her beliefs. The scientist is Karen Linn; she is brilliant if not a little odd and despite all that she has been through, continues to believe in her work and her abilities. Karen is special to me as this character was completely changed and written in honor of my wonderful friend Karen. The two share several of the same traits and bear a striking resemblance to each other, but with all my characters, this Karen is 100% her own person, and has her own goals and history. She’s a researcher but is still able to work a crowd to help her get what she wants. She may not always be truthful, but nothing she does is ever from malice. She’s also not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what she believes in. She will fight hard for her beliefs and the people she loves. As with Kaimi, she was wonderful to write and I hope readers will relate to her and enjoy her story.

Lastly, there is my billionaire former Porn Star. Yep, you heard that right. Michael Donovan is a former adult entertainer who now is the CEO of a multibillion-dollar company. I wanted to have a character so different from anything that people would expect, that when the idea of having a billionaire former porn star flip the bill for the mission to Mu, I had to run with it. But, as with all my characters, there is more to Michael than meets the eye. He has the heart of a dreamer and has learned (the hard way) to not care what people think of him or how he made his money. That doesn’t stop him from wanting to do good in the world. However, people will gladly take his money, but they don’t want anything to do with him as a person. Which is a shame, because Michael is a man worth knowing and learning about. I hope readers will find him as interesting and as fun as I do.

We thought it was a legend. We were wrong. The truth behind the Pulse and the lost city of Mu may end us all.

Well, there you go, my introduction of Mu; Legend of a Lost City. As I mentioned, the novel will be out November 11th and there will be more information coming, but I hope my teaser got you excited to read more about Mu; Legend of a Lost City and the characters that inhabit my most recent novel. Until next time, have a great week.

Pride Month 2023

Happy Wednesday Scribblers, I hope your Pride month is going well. I can say for certain, this has been the busiest Pride month I’ve had in quite a while and I’ve been having a blast. As you may have seen I’ve been active at several Pride Events all over Northern California and I have a few more to go. But that’s not all, I have some additional announcements to share with you this week.

Let’s get too it.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been at several Pride events: Placer Pride, Davis Pride and Sac Pride. These were all different and all an absolute blast. Placer Pride was a smaller more family-oriented event with a lot of families out enjoying the day. Davis Pride had a good mix of folks and everyone was there to enjoy the day, despite there being a few protesters, but nothing the police didn’t handle. And much to the protester’s dismay they weren’t able to dampen the wonderful event. Sacramento Pride was a huge two-day event with thousands of people, there were times it was so crowded that you could hardly walk in the pathways, but again the staff and volunteers were incredible as were security and the police. As with Davis Pride there were a few protesters, but again nowhere near the amount they ‘said’ they would have. In a way I felt sorry for the protesters, how sad are their lives that they believe the only way to feel any value or worth is to go out and try and make other people feel bad. If they could let go of their hate and fear they might actually have a good time and enjoy life.

Here are some of the photos from all the events, as you can see we had a great time selling books, talking to people, taking pictures, having fun, and enjoying each other’s company.

And Pride isn’t over yet, coming up in July I’ll be at BayCon (in Santa Clara, CA) from July 1 – July 4, 2023. I know it’s not a Pride Event, but I’m still counting the convention. I plan to be at the conference all four days and will be on multiple panels and I’ll be at the Liminal Fiction Booth, which should be a lot of fun. This is my second time at BayCon and I’m looking forward to it. Learn more about BayCon here.

Here are all my current panels, click here.

In August, I’m looking into having a booth (with other authors) at Silicon Valley Pride which will be August 26 – August 27, 2023, learn more here. But this event is pricey, so I’m not 100% sure yet, I’ll keep you posted.

Then on September 16th I’ll be at Modesto Pride, this will be my first time and I’m excited to be there and support another wonderful community. Find out more about Modesto Pride here.

As some of you may have seen in my June Newsletter (sign up here) I’ve been working away on a new writing project. The story is coming a long swimmingly. With luck I’ll be wrapping up the first draft in the next couple of weeks. I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Well, there you go, just a quick check in for the week. If you’re going to be at BayCon in July, stop by and say hello. I would love to see you there. Until next time, have a great week.

What’s happening? What’s Going on?

Happy Wednesday Scribblers, I hope you all had a great long weekend, celebrating Memorial Day (here in the US), for everyone else, I trust you’ve had a good week and a restful weekend. It’s been a busy couple of weeks and things aren’t slowing down anytime soon. Today I thought I would give you an update on what’s happening and what’s going on with me. As always, I want to take a moment and welcome my new Scribblers. I always appreciate hearing from you and seeing you out at events. Thanks for stopping by.

This last weekend, Eric and I had a little fun and went out to lunch and did a bit of shopping. When we go out, we are like kids in a candy store and we’re not to be trusted, but we had a good time and being out for a couple of hours was great. We even managed to buy a little something fun. We decided to add to our Lego collection and bought the Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle, which was fun to put together. I built the first half, and he built the second half. I think slowly we’re going to build our own Disneyland.

What was nice about this build is that it didn’t take days to complete, but a couple of hours. It’s incredible all the tiny little pieces they give you and you have to make sure you put them together correctly or you have to take things apart and fix what you’ve already completed, or thought you completed. As with all Lego sets, we had a few extra bits, so we found a way to embellish our castle, which is always fun.

Coming up this weekend, as some of you may have seen, I will be joining the wonderful group from QSac (find them here) at Davis Pride. The event is Sunday June 4th 10am – 4pm, so I hope if you are in the area you’ll come out and say hello. We had a great time last year, and I’m sure this year will be equally fun.

If you want to see all the events I’ll be going to don’t forget to check out my events page (click here).

Happening closer to home on June 17th 1pm – 2pm, several members of the Bay Area Queer Writers Association (BAQWA, learn more here) will be at the San Leandro Main Library (300 Estudillo Ave, San Leandro, CA) for a book reading. This is another free event and your support means a great deal, so if you have time, please come out and say hello.

On the writing front, I have Steve Connor (learn more here), back again working on Conspiracy - A New World, Book 3 (click here to learn more). Steve is back providing his voice and talent to the story and I can’t wait for you all to hear his great work. Have you read my A New World series yet? If not, you can get your sign copies here (US only) or you can find the audiobooks here and the eBooks and paperback books here. Check them out!

Also, I’m happy to report that I’m busy working on my next novel. I’m just over 40,000 words (150 pages or 16 chapters) in and I’m thrilled with how this story is coming along. I’ll be sharing more details about the story and the characters in my newsletter. Are you signed up? If not, join here and don’t miss out. I also provide my newsletter subscribers some exclusive offers.

And one more writing update. I’ve finished my next short story. It’s a Thanksgiving meet cute about two guys who meet at a grocery store on Thanksgiving Day, the story was a blast to write and I can’t wait for you to meet these two charming men.

Well, there you go, a quick check in this week. If you’re going to be in Davis, come and say hello and if you’re going to be in San Leandro, please stop by the San Leandro Main Library for the in person reading by several BAQWA Members. Until next time, have a great week.

Creating Interesting Characters

Happy Wednesday Scribblers, I hope you all had a great week. This week I thought we could talk about creating interesting book characters. Creating interesting characters is one of the most important aspects of writing a novel or a short story, especially in queer fiction. I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve read where the characters are bland and have absolutely nothing to offer the reader. Our characters are the ones who drive the plot, engage the readers, and make the story come alive. These are the people we need to cheer for and if don’t feel anything for them, then the book becomes drudgery to read. But how do you create characters that are not only believable but also memorable and original? Here are some tips to help with character development.

1. Start with a character archetype

A character archetype is a typical or universal pattern of behavior that represents a certain type of person in a story. For example, the hero, the villain, the sidekick, the mentor, etc. Archetypes help you define the basic personality, goals, and motivations of your character, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. You can use archetypes as a starting point, but don’t limit yourself to them. You can mix and match different archetypes or create your own unique ones. This is especially helpful when you are creating queer characters. You don’t want to land on stereotypes that can turn off your reader.

2. Give the character some flaws

No one is perfect, and neither should your characters be. Flaws make your characters more realistic and relatable, and they also create conflict and tension in your story. Faults can be physical, psychological, emotional, moral, or social. They can be minor quirks or major weaknesses that affect the character’s actions and decisions. For example, a character might be clumsy, stubborn, insecure, greedy, or impulsive. These shortcomings can also be sources of growth and change for your character throughout the story. I find this is really helpful in ensuring I don’t have perfect characters. I will even do this for my background characters.

3. Define the character’s goals and motivations

Every character, queer characters included, needs a reason to exist in your story. What do they want? Why do they want it? How do they plan to get it? These are the questions that define your character’s goals and motivations. Goals are the specific outcomes that your character desires or needs to achieve. Motivations are the underlying reasons or forces that drive your character to pursue their goals. These goals and motivations create stakes and urgency in the story, and they also reveal a lot about your character’s personality and values. What’s nice is these goals and motivations don’t always have to do with the plot of your story. You can treat them as significant as you want for the story.

4. Describe the character’s history

Your character’s past shapes their present and future. Their history includes their background, upbringing, education, relationships (good and bad), experiences, traumas, achievements, etc. All these factors influence your character’s worldview, beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, skills, fears, hopes, dreams, etc. You don’t need to write a detailed biography for every character, but you should have a clear idea of their history and how it affects them in the story. I also suggest that you keep a file on each of your characters with all this information for easy reference.

5. Allow the character to be vulnerable

Vulnerability is the ability to show one’s emotions and feelings without fear of judgment or rejection. And this is incredibly important for our characters, especially our Main Characters. It is also the willingness to take risks and face challenges despite uncertainty or potential failure. Vulnerability makes your characters more human and sympathetic, and it also creates opportunities for growth and change. To make your characters vulnerable, you need to put them in situations where they have to face their fears, doubts, insecurities, regrets, etc., and where they have to open up to others or themselves. I find this really important when I’m writing any kind of relationship.

6. Make your character a bit unpredictable

Predictability is boring. If your readers can always guess what your character will do or say next, they will lose interest in them and the story. To avoid this problem, you need to make your character a bit unpredictable. This doesn’t mean that you have to make them act randomly or illogically; rather, you have to make them act in ways that surprise or challenge the readers’ expectations. For example, you can make your character do something heroic or vulnerable; reveal a hidden secret or talent; change their mind or opinion; make a mistake or fail; etc. Adding in unpredictability to your characters is a lot of fun. I love doing this in my stories.

7. Do your research

If you want to create realistic and interesting characters and I cannot stress this enough, especially for queer characters, you need to do some research on the topics that relate to them. Or talk to people who live the life of your character. For example, if your character is a lawyer, you need to know how the legal system works; if your character is a musician, you need to know how music is composed and performed; if your character is from another culture or time period than yours, you need to know how people lived and behaved in that context; etc. Research can help you avoid stereotypes and clichés, and it can also provide you with inspiration and details that enrich your characters and your story. I find this helps me discover what a character’s vulnerabilities, goals and motivations are.

8. Steer clear of the biggest character development mistake

The biggest character development mistake is creating flat or static characters who don’t change or grow throughout the story. This can happen a lot. The more time you spend in fleshing out your characters at the beginning, the more interesting and exciting your characters become as you write their story.

Well, there you go. Here are eight ways to create interesting book characters. Did I leave anything out? Want to add to the list, let me know in the comments below. Until time have a great week.

AI for Authors: Pros and Cons

AI for Authors: Pros and Cons

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. I hope you are having a great day. This last week my boss and I were talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how they can be good and bad. AI, for those of you that don’t know (which I find that hard to believe) is a term that refers to the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing images, learning from data, and making decisions. AI is transforming many industries and sectors, including the creative field of fiction writing. Today, I’ll explore some of the pros and cons of using AI as an author, and offer some practical and ethical guidelines for integrating AI into your author business.

Pros of AI for Authors

  • AI can help authors write better novels by providing feedback on plot structure, narrative arc, character development, genre conventions, and reader expectations. For example, Marlowe (read more here) is an AI program that analyzes fiction manuscripts and gives authors suggestions on how to improve their stories based on bestseller data.

  • AI can help authors reach more readers by optimizing their marketing strategies, analyzing reader behavior and preferences, and enhancing their online presence. For example, tools based on narrow AI (find out more here) such as advertising algorithms, reader analysis and engagement, search and sales engines, translation software, and speech-to-text can help authors boost their visibility and sales.

  • AI can help authors unleash their creativity by generating new ideas, prompts, titles, characters, plots, and even passages of text. For example, OpenAI’s GPT-3 is a powerful language model that can produce coherent and diverse texts based on a given input or query.

Cons of AI for Authors

  • AI can pose a threat to authors’ livelihoods by replacing human writers or reducing their value. For example, some studios or publishers may use AI to create cheap or fast content without paying or crediting authors properly. Or some readers may prefer AI-generated content over human-written content.

  • AI can pose a challenge to authors’ originality by creating derivative or plagiarized content. For example, some AI programs may copy or remix existing texts without proper attribution or permission. Or some authors may rely too much on AI to generate or edit their content without adding their own voice or style.

  • AI can pose a risk to authors’ ethics by creating harmful or biased content. For example, some AI programs may produce texts that are offensive, misleading, inaccurate, or discriminatory. Or some authors may use AI to manipulate or deceive their readers or other stakeholders.

Guidelines for AI for Authors

  • Use AI as a tool, not a crutch. AI can augment your writing process, but it cannot replace your human creativity, judgment, and responsibility. You should always be in control of your content and make sure it reflects your vision and values.

  • Use AI with respect, not abuse. AI can enhance your writing experience, but it should not harm or exploit anyone else. You should always respect the rights and interests of other writers, readers, publishers, and platforms. You should also respect the limitations and challenges of AI itself.

  • Use AI with curiosity, not fear. AI can offer new opportunities and possibilities for your writing career, but it should not intimidate or discourage you. You should always be open to learning and experimenting with AI, but also be critical and cautious of its potential pitfalls and drawbacks.

For good or ill, AI is here to stay, and it will continue to shape the future of fiction writing. As an author, we can choose to embrace it or ignore it, but we cannot afford to be unaware of AI. By using AI wisely and ethically, we can leverage its benefits and avoid its drawbacks. Well, that’s all I have for this week. What do you think of AI? How are you going to use it in your writing or marketing? Until next time, have a great week.

Writing Update April 2023

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. I hope you are all having a great week. It’s been a minute since I provided a writing update, so I thought I would give you an update today on what’s happening in my writing world and I have a new project that I’m excited to share with you. I also have a fun giveaway announcement that I can’t forget to tell you about.

As you all may have seen, I finished Mu; Legend of a Lost City and I got some amazing feedback from my Beta Readers, which is always helpful. Today I’m thrilled to be able to share the current blurb with you, keep in mind the blurb may change:

What do you think? Are you excited for the book to come out? I know I am. Let’s hope my publisher is as well. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Next up, I’m really excited to announce that I’ve been quietly working on my next project. Now you might think that I’m talking about the last book of my A New World series and you would be partially correct. However, over the last several weeks I’ve been working on something else. Something new. Something I’m excited to announce to you today.

A Haunted House (Working Title)

I’ve been researching and speaking with various folks about writing a new suspense novel about a modern-day haunted house that takes place here in the heart of Silicon Valley. I don’t want to give too much away at this point but what I can share is the following:

  • A family moves into their brand-new dream home in a new neighborhood in San Jose, CA

  • Events happen that bring a whole neighborhood together in fear and in the unexplained

  • How will this new community of strangers and neighbors deal with the paranormal that is afflicting them and their surroundings. Is this a single apparition, a haunting, a poltergeist, or something worse, a demon?

  • Will they find help and turn their nightmares back into their dreams?

For my inspiration I want to share a picture of a dreamy suburban home that has always brought joy to me. If you know, you know.

If you know, you know.

Oh… I almost forgot. I’m part of some free short story giveaways this month (April 2023), so if you are looking for a wide selection of free short stories then check out these giveaways. There is something for everyone:

Writing Update -February 2023

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. It’s been a busy week… In fact, I had no idea how busy until today when I realized I hadn’t gotten a post together for this week. This week I’m following up on a couple of other posts and providing a general writing update. As I mentioned there is a lot to report on. Let’s get too it.

Last week, when I mentioned I have four short stories coming out, well this week, I’m happy to share all four covers with you. I’m thrilled with how they turned out.

Also, I’m happy to share the book blurb for each of the stories:

Election Night:

Elections are stressful enough, and none more than this one. With so much riding on the vote this year, Sammy needed involvement to get her candidate elected and into the Whitehouse. Now on election night she’s had a terrible day, but plans to work on the phones until the bitter end. Already late for her volunteering, Sammy rushes for the ancient building’s elevator, mercifully being held for her by an attractive stranger. More than an election is held in the balance when the elevator gets stuck between floors, and Sammy finds out that the woman stuck with her works for the enemy camp. Who will win the election, and how will these two women make it out of the elevator in one piece?

LandsEnd:

Prom Night. The last hurrah before college. Brandon and Ed are the chaperons for the LandsEnd High School Senior Prom, hosted at the LandsEnd Yacht Club. Its a night of dreams until the ground shakes and flashes of light brighten the sky, knocking out everything electrical, casting the dance into darkness. Cut off and alone, the adults and the students have to figure out what to do and what’s happening. Worryingly, what’s that strange clicking sound off in the distance that seemed to scare off the animals?

Nightingale’s Heart:

Rahim is the head of security for Aza, a popstar, who had a fan with mental health issues break into their home a few years back. Since being hired, Rahim has ensured Aza, and their team’s, safety. However, Rahim, over this time, has grown fond of Aza, hoping for more, but never wanting to cross the line of professionalism. Could his feelings be reciprocated? Could Aza find this lug of a man who protects them more than a ‘Big Guy’ who sees to their safety? Or is this another relationship where Rahim will get hurt?

The Old Road:

Halloween; a night of tricks and treats, but what happens when you take a stranger for a creepy night of mischief and fun? Anything can happen on Halloween, even the unimaginable.

Once these short stories are out, I’ll be sure to let you all know, so you can get your free copy, as long as you’re signed up for my newsletter… you are signed up for my newsletter, right?

If you are in the Sacramento, CA area this weekend, I’ll be part of the Bay Area Queer Writers Association (BAQWA) anthology reading at the Lavender Library: 1414 21st St, Sacramento, CA 95811-5209, United States. We will be reading from our 2022 anthology; BAQWA Presents: Two 2022, which just so happens to have Nightingale’s Heart in it, and I’ll be reading from that short story. I hope to see you all there, as all funds raised from the book sales will go to support the Lavender Library.

Last update I have for this week, is about Mu; Legend of the Lost City. It’s finished and I have it with one of my Beta Readers. I’m pleased with how this story has turned out. I’m excited to have this wonderful tale published.

I have worked on the blurb for the story and I’m happy to share it here now:

The Vampire’s War – Damian Serbu

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. I hope you are all having a great week. Today I’m thrilled to have author Damian Serbu here to chat about his newest novel The Vampire’s War, which is the fifth book in his The Realm of the Vampire Council. If you haven’t checked out his amazing series and you enjoy vampire books, then you are missing out on some excellent books.

Instead of having Damian come over and chat about his book, I asked him to provide something different. He wrote up what inspired him to craft this story and how he learned but the novels underlying tone actually meant to him. Let’s jump into what Damian has to say.

Quite often, when asked why I wrote a novel, I explain how the story called to me. The characters, episodes, and plot line emerge within my head over time, until I have to put them to paper. In other words, the muse dictates a lot of what I write! I was excited, however, to be asked about what inspired The Vampire’s War, because more played into its development than the muse alone.

I had hinted in other vampire novels about a rogue vampire who defies the Vampire Council. And in The Vampire’s Protégé, which introduces a completely new vampire, the defiant vampire plays a key role. By the end of Protégé, in fact, we learn a war is brewing, but there are no other details. If I wanted to return to my vampires, I was going to have to dive into this war. In other words, the war at the heart of The Vampire’s War was a slow burn coming at us over several stories.

I delayed a little while, however, because I was concerned about the scope of a vampire war and how to put that to paper. I was nervous because the concept went farther outside my typical comfort zone than most of my other tales. I was sitting on a situation where I had ideas but too much uncertainty to start putting the grand scheme to paper. However, along came the second push toward writing The Vampire’s War.

This is where the muse comes into play. Vampires have always called to me. I write other genres, but even when I take a break, I return to vampires. When I complete a novel, I think – okay, done with the vampires! Time for them to go away for a bit! They comply for a little while, until I begin to see flashes of a scene pop into my head. Then they demand more and more attention, until I jot some notes about a possible story. However, I wanted to let them rest. I had other novels in the queue within my brain that were supposed to be written first. But one after another, the vampires poked and prodded. They said shit like, “Yeah, you think you like the YA sci fi thing you’re plugging away on. But we’re cuter. And funnier. Oh! Hey! Guess what I did that you need to tell people about!” You see, vampires nag at you.

The sexual allure, power, and concept of immortality within vampire worlds has always fascinated me. I love vampires of all stripes; from the dark vampire of Bram Stoker and other evil vampires, to the universe of Anne Rice. I find the uniqueness of each author’s creation so absorbing. Plus, with my vampires and I think with other vampire writers, stripping away mortality, and in many ways fear itself, offers a platform for deep dives into other human emotions and motivations. This factor pulls me back into the vampire world time and time again. Combined with their incessant voices in my head, it was time to bring them back to life.

Fascinatingly, the third factor in what produced The Vampire’s War was dormant as I wrote this novel. I was going with these first two motivations as driving me to write The Vampire’s War, unaware that a third, and possibly more powerful force, pushed me along. Before I reveal the issue, let me share how I figured out its influence.

I was talking to a close friend about my writing. She asked what I was currently working on, so I explained how I was wrapping up The Vampire’s War. The Vampire’s War is written from Jaret’s point of view. He’s a character who first appeared in The Bachmann Family Secret, a young adult ghost story, and then blended into the vampire world in The Vampire’s Witch, where he becomes a vampire. He’s also in The Vampire’s Protégé, but never by name because he refuses to reveal his identity to the main character. However, Jaret tells about the impending war and is attempting to find help in combating it. These factors make him an ideal vehicle for watching the war. He’s young and not part of the vampire leadership, so he and the reader together discover facts about the war as they develop. And he is extremely powerful because in addition to his vampire ability, he’s a witch.

Back to the matter at hand, I explained to my friend how I realized that The Vampire’s War has two main storylines, not one. Of course, one is the war itself. But as the words hit paper, I came to realize we were also watching Jaret grow into himself as a new, confidant, and liberated vampire. There was a self-discovery component for Jaret that evolved naturally, without my intending to tell it even as it dominated much of the plot.

She then asked me, “do you think what happened to you had anything to do with how you tell Jaret’s story?” Boom! Out of nowhere I saw a major factor in why this story came into being. I had been laid off, in a very unethical hatchet job against a lot of friends, colleagues, and myself. But Paul and I had been planning for me to retire in about five years or so, and after deliberation and analysis, concluded we could take that step now, and thus I became a full-time writer! Jaret’s story had become part of how I processed what happened to me and then embraced my new life. For the first time, I don’t answer to anyone, not a parent, teacher, professor, boss – nobody but the dogs (who are still in charge). The way my friend led me to this revelation was so much fun. And I am happy to have the opportunity to share with you the fun way The Vampire’s War came to fruition!

I don’t know about you, but I love hearing about how authors come up with their story ideas and how our actual lives can seep into the stories we write, even without us knowing until someone points the fact out to us. Let me know in the comments below what you think about how our muses work. Until next time, have a great week.

Book Blurb:

War brews among vampires. Facing extinction at the hands of an ancient one, the Vampire Council plods along with a secret strategy. Jaret Bachmann, both vampire and witch, fears the Council elders move too slowly. He has the power to assist them in defeating their enemy, but the longer they keep him at arm’s length the more defiant he becomes. He’s already pushing the boundaries to assert his will when tragedy strikes, devastating him and compelling him to become even more rebellious. A young vampire alone in the world, Jaret struggles to find his true self and discover how he wants to spend the remainder of his eternal life, even as the vampire war intensifies and the rogue vampire strikes again. To compound his problems, he’s faced with the allure of a hot renegade vampire, not sure if he is friend or foe. Who will win the war, and where will Jaret’s soul-searching lead him? Find out in The Vampire’s War.

Cover Art

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. How is your day going? You all hanging in there? I thought today would be a good day to talk about cover art and cover design. There are some authors, and for the life of me I don’t understand, that don’t pay any attention to the covers that are used for their books. I’m not saying this is all authors. In fact, I have a feeling it’s only a small minority, but lately I’ve seen some awful covers. I don’t know if these terrible designs have to do with the sheer number of self-published books out there, but dear lord, if these books are being pushed out by publishing houses, then they should be ashamed of themselves. Especially with all the wonderfully talented graphic artists and designers to pick from.

I’m not going to share the bad covers I’ve seen, because what I don’t like someone may love.

However, consider this a public service announcement to all authors out there. If you are self-publishing your book, please pay attention to the cover. An amazing cover is one of the best ways to market and sell your book. Now, unless you are an extremely talented artist yourself, then pay to have something professionally done. Book covers tend to start at $50 (US) and go up from there. I’ve seen some wonderful covers at this lower price point. However, like with all things the more you pay the better (and more customizable) the cover can be.

One sure fire way to ensure you have a great looking cover, is to do a search for the best cover art in your genre.  It’s amazing what will pop up and give you some great ideas. When it comes to cover design, really do your homework. If you spent months and years working on your book, then spending a week or two to find and acquire the perfect cover for your book is well worth the investment. Especially since this is your introduction to new readers. Everyone will judge your book by the cover, despite what we’ve all been told.

Here is a link to a cover designer, Sleepy Fox Studio, I’ve used in the past (and I’m not getting anything for this, I only wanted to share one resource out there, but there are several artists who can do wonderful cover art for your book) click here.

What are your thoughts on book covers? Do you care what the cover looks like? Have you ever been put off from buying a book because of the cover? Or worse, have you ever bought a book based on the cover then hated the book? Let me know in the comments below. Until next time, have a great week.

2022; Year in Review

Happy New Year everyone and happy Wednesday Scribblers. It has been a crazy year, and today I thought I would do a year in review, and share all the things that brought me joy this year. I also thought I would share a few things that may or may not be on your radar, which I hope you will all check out and support.

First and foremost, as I hope you all know I’ve had two new books come out this year; Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3) (click here) and Volaria (click here), I was also part of three anthologies this year as well; Save the World: Twenty Sci-Fi Writers Save the Planet (click here), BAQWA Presents: Two (click here), and Horror Addicts Guide to Life 2 (click here). There was a lot of writing this year, which always brings me joy. I’m thrilled to be involved with all these other incredible authors. I’ve learned so much from each of them, and I believe that has improved my writing greatly.

This year, I returned to in person events and boy did I miss them. I didn’t attend too many events, but the ones I did go to were a joy to attend. This year I attended: The Hayward Lit Hop, The Bay Area Book Festival, Davis Pride, and BayCon 2022. It was so good to see people in person and get to sign books and meet fans. I absolutely love being out and about seeing folks. I’m hoping to go to more events this year (click here to see my events page).

Publishing three more audiobooks this year was incredibly special for me. In 2022 I released: Contact-A New World (Book 1) and Conviction-A New World (Book2) as narrated by Steve Connor; and, The Calling as narrated by Vance Bastian. Both these actors/narrators are exceptionally talented and made the novel come to life. I could be more pleased with all the work that went into them. Find them here, on Audible and here on iTunes. You won’t be disappointed. I know I wasn’t.

What really made my year, was getting to contribute to some wonderful online and print publications. I had two articles featured on Pen to Print (find them here and here). I was asked to provide an article for the San Francisco Chronicle which was a huge honor (find it here). The East Bay Time did a write up about me and my two novels; Conspiracy and Volaria (click here). Lastly, I was interviewed on behalf of the Bay Area Queer Writers Association (BAQWA) for the Bay Area Berkley High Jacket (click here).

Another bright spot for me this year, was getting to be interviewed on Small Publishing in a Big Universe (find it here) and WROTE Podcast did me the honor of not only allowing me to come on and chat about my writing and my books (click here), but they also had me for the entire month of December as a guest reviewer for their holiday movie reviews, which was an absolute joy. Here are the links to each of the episodes:

Gayeen Froese (12/9/22) – click here (we review Christmas at the Ranch)

Faith Mosley (12/16/22) – click here (we review Happiest Season)

Kevin Klehr (12/23/22) – click here (we review The Holiday Sitter)

2022 Yearly Wrap-up (12/30/22) – click here (we review The Christmas House 2)

Being part of all these podcasts and YouTube channel interviews really got me excited about the possibilities, and what, if anything, I could do to help support the writing community. This year I launched my Writing Tips and Tricks for Authors on my YouTube Channel (find it here). I wanted to reach out to not only authors but to readers as well and share what it’s like to be a ‘real’ indie author and all the work that goes into it. These episodes are fifteen minutes (or shorter) and it’s been a lot of fun creating them and seeing the comments and reaction from folks. I’m already up to 30 subscribers but it would be great to reach 100 or even a thousand. Who knows. But if you want to keep up with me and get to hear and learn about writing I encourage you to check out the channel and see what you think.

The last thing that has brought me massive amounts of joy this last year, is each of you. Knowing that there are folks out there who love my writing and buy my books makes me happy and gives me the desire to keep going. 2023 Promises to be another crazy year, and I’ll have a new book (or two) coming out, so keep an eye out.

There you have it, my year in review. Here’s to 2023 and all that lays ahead of us. Until next time, have a great week.

Guest Post - Three Ghosts by Kevin Klehr

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. Today I’m happy to have Kevin Klehr back to talk about crafting stories and how what might be a great idea may not work for your story. No matter how many times you rework the tale. Kevin uses the example of from his newest short story Three Ghosts. Which is out now.

My new short story, Three Ghosts, took four drafts to write. This is partly because I’m a perfectionist, and partly because an idea my husband suggested really appealed to me.

I’m one of those authors who loves to include plot twists. I’m a plotter and carefully work through my outline to throw my readers off course. So, when my husband, Warren, suggested a uniquely weird ending to this story, I naturally weaved his idea in. And as this is no longer the ending to the story, I can share it with you.

The story is about a ghostly couple, Tim and Carol, and their spirited gay friend, Alexander. Every time a shooting star is scheduled, they choose a house with the best vantage point to haunt, always making sure the residents aren’t home. But this time the inhabitants return unexpectedly, and they just happen to be Alexander’s ex-boyfriend and the ex’s new lover.

Toward the end of the second draft, Alexander is on Carol’s psychiatrist’s couch relaying the story we’ve just read. Neither are ghosts, and Alexander is under the illusion his other analyst is Carol’s husband, Tim. Carol tells him yet again she is not married. We also find out the story which was just presented has other twists.

The final scene features Alexander being analysed by Tim who also points out he is not married because Carol doesn’t exist, and that he is the only psychiatrist Alexander is seeing. Then more twists are uncovered.

In the third draft, I ditched the scene with Tim as the analyst and worked the final twists into the previous scene with Carol.

The problem was any version with characters suddenly turning into psychotherapists would have infuriated readers. I really wanted to make my husband’s idea work, and in a novel it could have. I would have dropped in moments where the real world would break in, leaving the reader guessing. But in a short story, playing with genre is risky.

The fourth and final draft has a sweet ending in line with this comedic short. Alexander is no longer suffering from delusions. And so far, one reviewer made a comparison to Noel Coward, and another loved the twists which are still in this story.

That’s the thing with storytelling. Readers come on a journey with you, and any detour you throw in must be carefully considered.

Thank you Kevin for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I can and will admit that I’ve had similar ideas for stories I’ve worked on, however, I agree Readers would not be happy no matter how clever we think we are as writers. you can pick up Kevin’s new short story here. To learn more about Kevin and his writing you can find him here. Until next time have a great week.

Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3) Has Arrived

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. Today is the day, Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3) has arrived. This amazing third installment is out now and you can pick up your copy (click here).

Here is what folks are saying about this new book:

It was a pleasure to see Todd, Mirtoff, Mi'ko and the other characters again! It's like meeting old friends.
This third book is a little more dark than the previous two, but there are some funny moments and lots of good banter. The writing is amazing as usual. - Goodreads Reviewer

So, I'm not a huge fan of science fiction (in books, love movies) with that being said, I really enjoyed this story. It took me a moment to find my footing since I hadn't read the other books, but once I did I couldn't put the book down. - BookBub Reviewer

The strength of this book is in its wide cast of strong characters. Some are easy to love, others are easy to hate, and the rest are easy to read.

This is one of those books where it's easy to get a hundred pages into it before you realize it. Though I do recommend reading the previous books in the series first. Have fun! - BookBub - Reviewer

Here is the blurb for book three in my award-winning Sci-Fi series:

A little blue world, the third planet from the sun. It’s home to 7 billion people with all manner of faiths, beliefs and customs, divided by bigotry and misunderstanding, who have been told they are not alone in the universe. Anyone watching from the outside would pass by this fractured and tumultuous world, unless they had no other choice.

It’s been a little over a year since Todd Landon’s life changed with the arrival of the Nentraee. Continuing his duties as Special Envoy for Terran Affairs, Todd finally feels at home with the aliens; gaining more responsibility and influence with both races. Plans are underway for two Interplanetary spaceports and additional solar exploration. It’s an exciting time for both the humans and the Nentraee.

Not everything is as perfect as some hope. Speaker General Mirtoff and Vice-Speaker Mi’ko of the Nentraee are worried that the Liberi Dei plot additional terrorist attacks and may have inside help. Threats are clear, but who can they trust? Could Todd be helping them unknowingly, or worse covertly? Will these new space endeavors continue to bring the human and the Nentraee together or will a conspiracy hiding in the shadows fracture an already shaky alliance?

That’s all for this week! I hope you’ll pick up your copy of Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3) and let yourself get wrapped up in this amazing story and get to know these wonderful characters (click here to get your copy today). Well, that’s all for this week. Until next time, have a great week.

Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3) Cover Reveal

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. Things have been crazy these last couple of weeks and if you haven’t seen it yet, today I’m thrilled to share with you the cover for Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3). I know I’ve been talking about this book for years (yes, literally years) and finally I have all kinds of details to share.

As with all my covers, I’m pleased. This cover matches the theme and the design of the first two books, and I believe it’s absolutely beautiful. Conspiracy will debut on August 16, 2022. This novel went from being in somewhat of a limbo state to rushing out the door, however I can assure you the book has gone through several rounds of editing and is well and truly polished (he says knowing full well something has been missed). Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be sharing more details, buy links and all those important details, but for today let’s sit back and enjoy this beautiful cover.

In the meantime, what do you think? Do you like this new cover? Does the design peek at your interest? What are you looking forward to most in this next installment? Well, that’s all for this week. Until next time, have a great week.

Volaria Cover Reveal

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. It’s August and today, do I have news for you. After teasing you for months, now is the time! Feast your eyes on this beautiful cover for Volaria! I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like it and I couldn’t be more pleased.

I’m so thrilled to share the cover of Volaria with you today, this beautiful new cover is for my next science fiction and urban fantasy novel debuting on October 1, 2022. This is my first novel with my new publishing house Spectrum Books (find them here) and I couldn’t be more pleased with how well the book is moving along. First round of edits have been sent off and I’ve been working behind the scenes with the staff to create some wonderful marketing pieces I’m going to be sharing as well.

Here is the blurb of this exciting new story:

Humans are no longer alone; they have been joined by Arcanes, Lycans, and Vampires. It’s been over a hundred years since the Earth went through The Shift. Where once almost eight billion humans lived, the population now holds at four billion. But that wasn’t the only change. No one anticipated the branching of human DNA to produce new species of humans. Arcanes, Lycans, and Vampires are hidden throughout the genome, awaiting puberty before they manifest distinctly unhuman abilities. Finally, the new species of man were welcomed. No longer studied or treated as outcasts by most. People accepted these new humans, and they integrated into society, albeit not easily. This allowed the UN Government to focus on colonizing space, in order to secure a future for all.

Risks remain, however, permitting a vampire to feed from you can cause shared memories. Tobin Corsian took such a risk. He resides in a newly reopened district of San Jose, California, where his family’s old home stood. He lives there with his friend Mikel, a Lycan, and his dog Begger. Instead of making his mandatory monthly blood donation at the government blood bank for the vampire community, Tobin decides, with the help of his therapist, to visit Biter, a vampire spa. The spa allows vampires to feed from humans directly while providing spa and sexual services, granting the donor a three-month reprieve from their required donations. Tobin’s encounter at Biter opens a window to his past and an experience he had as a child on the moon. Questions abound as he tries to unravel his past and make sense of his life.

What do you think? Are you as excited as I am to get your hands on this wonderful new dark tale? Mark your calendars, as this book will go on sale on October 1, 2022. I will announce once pre-orders are ready, which should be in the next couple of days. You’ll be able to get your copy of Volaria exclusively on Amazon. Well, that’s all for this week. Until next time, have a great week.

Temaj is gifted to Solon for his stay, but the last person Solon wants in his bed is a slave sent to spy on him—even if he is a gorgeous, silver-tongued vixen of a man.

Trouble brews when emeralds go missing. With only a clever concubine and the viceroy’s harem on his side, can Solon solve the mystery and escape with his life, or are he and Temaj destined to haunt the walls of the palace forever?

Announcements Spring 2022

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. Have I got a lot to share with you today; three different book announcements and two upcoming events. These last few weeks (and months) have been busy. I’ve been doing a lot of work behind the scenes and today I’m thrilled to share it all with you. First, as you may have heard, I have an article in the upcoming book, Horror Addicts Guide to Life 2. Second, I have a short story in the wonderful anthology; Save the World. Third, this week I signed the contract for Volaria, which will be published through Spectrum Books. Last, I have two in-person events coming up: Hayward Lit Hop and The Bay Area Book Festival (in Berkley, CA) Let’s dive deeper into each of these.

Horror Addicts Guide to Life 2 is a collection of stories and articles that has been put together by HorrorAddicts.Net. They reached out to me to share my article; When did you know? I spent some time updating the article, diving a little deeper into my personal story, which you will read more about in this coming book. The editors have put a lot of work into this publication and I’m impressed with how the product is looking. This book will make a wonderful addition to your reading library. The book is a fundraiser, so I’m not making anything from the sale of the story, but I’m pleased to be part of this effort and supporting such a great group.

If you want to learn more and see who else will be in the book, you can learn more here.

Next up, we have Save The World. This is the second book in the series. The first book is titled, Fix the World (you can buy it here). This year I have my short story; Interview, as part of the collection. I’m pleased with this story and I’m honored to have the work included. I don’t want to give too much away about the story, because I’m hoping folks will go out and buy it. Click here for pre-orders.

Book Blurb:

Climate change is no longer a vague future threat. Forests are burning, currents are shifting, and massive storms dump staggering amounts of water in less than 24 hours. Sometimes it’s hard to look ahead and see a hopeful future.

We asked sci-fi writers to send us stories about ways to save the world from climate change.  From the myriad of stories we received, we chose the twenty most amazing (and hopefully prescient) tales.

Dive in and find out how we might mitigate climate change via solar mirrors, carbon capture, genetic manipulation, and acts of change both large and small.

The future’s not going to fix itself.

Next up for the week, I’m so pleased to announce that I have signed a contract with Spectrum Books (learn more here) for them to publish my latest novel, Volaria. We have set the launch for Fall 2022. I will be sharing more information as we get closer to the launch.

Here is the official blurb:

It’s been over a hundred years since the Earth went through The Shift. Where once almost eight billion humans lived, the population now holds at four billion. But that wasn’t the only change. Humans are no longer alone; they have been joined by Arcanes, Lycans, and Vampires. At first these new groups were thought of as genetic anomalies caused by The Shift, something to be cured, but later scientists discovered that each new generation of humans born would produce these new variances at the onset of puberty. Finally, the new species of man were welcomed. No longer studied or treated as outcasts by most. People accepted these new humans, and they integrated into society. This allowed the UN Government to focus again on the Moon and on Mars, ensuring the survival of all, as humankind became a multi-planet species.

Tobin Corsian resides in a newly reopened district of San Jose, California, where his family’s old home stood. He lives there with his friend Mikel, a Lycan, and his dog Begger. Instead of making his mandatory monthly blood donation at the government blood bank for the vampire community, Tobin decides, with the help of his therapist, to visit Biter, a vampire spa. The spa allows vampires to feed from humans directly while providing spa and sexual services, granting the donor a three-month reprieve from their mandatory donations. However, permitting a vampire to feed from you comes with risks, shared memories among them. Tobin’s encounter at Biter opens a window to his past and an experience he had as a child on the moon. Questions abound as he tries to unravel his past and make sense of his life.

Writing Update – March 2022

Happy Wednesday Scribblers, I hope you are all doing well. As you may have noticed, I took last week off from my blog. I was dealing with some medical issues. Nothing to worry about, and everything all worked out. Which has been a big relief. I’m happy to say I’m not going anywhere anytime soon!

This week I wanted to provide a quick update for you. Regarding my writing, I’m still moving forward with Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3). However, there has been a delay with my publisher. I’m hopeful this will not slow down the long-delayed release of the book, but I can’t say for sure. In audiobook news. Contact-A New World (Book 1) is about finished and I’m thrilled with how well Steve Connor (find him here) has done with the story. Steve really has narrated the heck out of the novel and brought my words to life. I can’t wait for you all to hear it. Along those lines, once Steve finishes with Contact, he will move on to Conviction (find both books here for signed copies and here for all other editions). I’ll keep you posted on when the audiobooks are available.

Also, on the writing front, I’m about ready to send off Volaria. I have another round of edits I want to make and then I’ll be shopping the story around to see if I can get any bites. Wish me luck.

Lastly, and I couldn’t be more pleased to share; I have in-person event news. With the restrictions being lifted and more and more events coming back. I’m happy to share some of the following in-person events I have planned:

Conspiracy-A New World (Book 3) Teaser

Happy Wednesday Scribblers, I hope you are all doing well. These last few weeks have been crazy with everything going on in the world and here at home. Enjoy this teaser:

Chapter One

The Security Training area appeared ordinary, especially since the space was in a secured part of the ship. Yes the area had grass and a few shrubs outside the façade but the endless sky feeling didn’t exist here; overall this area had been built more for function and less for form. Still, Todd was glad he had access to the location, and the gym had everything they needed for a good workout. He had even managed to have the Nentraee bring up some human gym equipment for his use, as he didn’t want to risk his life on the Nentraee equipment. Sure the human machines got a few odd looks from the Nentraee security when he and Dan used them, but Vi-Narm confided in him several of the security personnel tried the pieces and used them when no humans were around.

He cracked his neck, thinking of his earlier conversation with Brad. Seeing his brother again would be a nice treat, and Brad had been correct, too much time had passed since Todd had seen Brad or the rest of his family down on Earth. The infrequent visits weren’t all his fault, so much had changed over the last year and he had a lot of work to do, especially knowing Liberi Dei continued to lurk out there; waiting. A shudder ran down his spine; the death of the leader of the Liberi Dei haunted him.

Too bad you won’t live long enough to find out. What had they been organizing? Their death was a shame really, killed by their own people before he found out what they and Liberi Dei actually wanted. However, they were still out there planning. Which added to his frustration of late, Mi’ko and Mirtoff no longer included him in anything to do with the terrorist organization, saying keeping him detached from the matter kept him safe.

Todd had no reason to doubt them, but something tickled the back of his mind and he wasn’t sure if this was the only reason they kept him in the dark about Liberi Dei.

He missed the tick of his pocket watch.

So much had changed.

He dug through his bag, pulled out his pocket watch, and checked the time.

“Where is he?” Todd huffed and put the timepiece in his gym bag, his hand brushing along the cool surface of his datapad.

Dan should have been here twenty minutes ago; at this rate Todd would barely have enough time for their workout and for him to get changed and ready for the interview.

A chirp called his attention.

Todd reached into his bag and pulled out his datapad. Now what? He tapped the pad to activate the device.

“Dan!” Todd’s voice called out louder than he had hoped, but no one around him seemed to notice. “Where are you? You’re late.”

“I know.” Dan’s expression remained flat with no Danness to flavor his words. “Listen, I’m heading to Earth, I have to see my family and take care of some things?”

“What? Is everything okay.”

“Fine.” Dan’s tone faltered and his expression sank. “They’re fine, sorry, just a lot going on and my mom isn’t getting any younger.”

“I get it, my parents–”

“Look I have to go. I’ll talk to you soon.”

“When you–”

The communications ended and the Nentraee seal appeared.

“What the hell?” Todd shook his head and dropped the pad into his bag.

Todd raked a hand through his hair. Well now he would have plenty of time to get ready for the interview. He made his way over to the lockers to change into his work clothes and ceremonial robe. Once Todd cleaned up he made his way out of the locker room.

“Special Envoy.” A deep familiar voice caught Todd’s attention as he left the facility.

He turned to see Vi-Narm standing there in the equivalent of workout wear: loose pants and a flowy top.

“Hi Vi-Narm.”

“Shouldn’t you be getting ready to meet with GNN?”

Todd nodded. “I planned to get in some training with Dan today, but…”

“If you would like to train I would be happy to workout with you, after your duties.” Vi-Narm tossed her long ponytail over her shoulder.

Todd picked at his deep-blue ceremonial cloak, the one given to him by Mi’ko and Mirtoff to represent his standing in Nentraee society. The cloak draped over his shoulders, and the wide embroidered collar with silver stitching sparkled as the threads caught the light. He checked the two large silver clasps with matching deep-blue stones attaching the cloak to his shoulders. The ends of the cloak fell to the floor, revealing the embroidery as the stitching continued down to each of the eight symbols representing the Nentraee clans and the one representing humans.

“Do I look okay?” Todd asked.

“You look respectable for your position and the purpose of your meeting.” Vi-Narm said.

“And with that not so shining endorsement, I’ll head off.” he winked at her. “Thanks for the offer to work out, I’ll have to take you up on the suggestion, especially if Dan keeps ditching me.”

On his way out, he gave one more glance over his shoulder to the facility and the surrounding area. Dan and he were supposed to work out twice a week, and yet over the last several months Dan had cancelled many of their get togethers, not just the workouts. Each time they met, Dan appeared more preoccupied. More distant. He shook his head. At least he still had Brad’s visit to look forward too, even if he would be here for work and not play.

He felt the tick of his pocket watch and marched on in time with each tick. Once he found a viewport he glanced out, seeing one of the Speaker General’s ship’s parks. A group of xĩmé flew by, the deep blue of their feathers a contrast to the yellow leaves of the nabutimaba tree. He chuckled and shook his head. Recent events seemed insane to him, like something out of some sci-fi series.

“What a year.” He sighed as he continued on.
